| My first band was the "4 a Ramblers" at the age of eleven. 4a was the name of the class in junior school. Instruments consisted of a washboard, a wooden box with a broomhandle and a piece of string attached, (this was
the double bass), and a four string plastic Elvis Presley guitar, (this was played? by me). This was a present from my parents for passing my 11 plus exam. There was a box of some kind that one attached to the neck! You then pressed a button and this miraculously resulted in a chord being sounded. Ah, the wonders of technology!
Learnt my first real chords on the guitar at the age of 12 from my old mate Barry Hammett. This lead to the forming of our first group "The Primitives". Our very first gig was in Penlan old people's home. We rocked 'em and they loved it??? The name of the band was later changed to "The Saints". At this time everyone went through an AC 30 amplifier! I mean the guitars, bass and vocal mic! Must have sounded good! We'd come a long way from Selmer Little Giants and Bird amplifiers! Errol, our bass player had the first Fender precision bass that I ever saw! I loved those low notes and would play on it as often as possible. At age 16: Started playing bass. My Mother bought me a Hofner Beatle bass, which I used for many years, and which I still have. Did many, many gigs with the Saints in teenage years, as well as playing in many other line ups during this era. This was the era when every street boasted at least two bands. The funny thing is that we were all playing almost every night. Age 17: In between the rock'n'roll, I got introduced to the local dance band scene! Couldn´t read a note of music but the old boys were very patient with me. Played swing for the first time. Age 19-23: Various rock bands. "Cherry Pie". Derek Morgan's dance band in The Caswell Bay hotel. Viv's dance band in the Langland Court hotel. Various concert parties in working men's clubs. Recorded in London with Brian Breeze. First time recording in a professional studio for one of my songs. At age 23: First professional job playing six nights a week in the local Top Rank ballroom. Learnt to read music. |

Age 24-30: "Glen ballroom big band", "The Johnny Francis Band". Hundreds of incestuous local group formations. "The Trembling Knees", to this day one of my favourite ever bands.
Age 30-33: Learnt my studio craft with many sessions in The "Alkatraz" Studio(**) in Port Talbot, South Wales. First real experiences of London and the recording scene! European tour with "Digby Richards Band"(**) supporting "Dolly Parton". "Faded Glory"(**), a very fine 50's style rock'n'roll band, we even played a couple of my songs. Many jingle sessions in Swansea Sound studios. Many rock'n'roll bands. Age 34-36: Butlins and Pontins holiday camps. Caribbean cruise ships (started to develop a heavy interest in jazz, but always a rock'n'roller at heart). "Faded Glory"(**). Age 37-?: Recorded some of my songs in Loco studios, Gwent, South Wales. My first real experience as producer. "Trevor Trott Trio"(*), "Dave Tipton Band"(*), "Jim O'Rourke Band"(*) featuring Donal Lunny and Davy Spillane. "Huw Chiswell Band"(**). Tours of Wales with Welsh theatre companies(**). BBC and HTV television sessions(**). "The Broadcasters"(*), "The Breeze"(*), "The Peter Welch Band"(**), "The Mary Whitehouse Experience", etc. etc.. (*) Featuring Terry Williams on drums.
